I really had to push myself to keep up but managed to finally finish the block. I was surprised how much I enjoyed doing it and that I learned so much. I also finished her required 101 intermediate course so am set to go for some of the embellishment classes she offers. Here is my finished block from the Basic class. The bow needs to go but that little area needs something and I'm stumped for now. <div> </div> <div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em" href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-39mg5xQDnz4/VQWXlnDV8pI/AAAAAAAACGs/e-0QHi-y0lU/s640/blogger-image-801537919.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img style="float: none; You'll recognize her from an earlier post where I mentioned having put her on a wooden form that I ordered when I bought the doll. It made her much, much too tall. I put her in the back row of my group of half dolls but she still stood there looking like Lurch in a silk dress and glaring at me for having done that to her. So, long story short, I took her apart and made her petite! What do you think? <br /></p> <p align="center"> <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" width="608" border="0"><tbody> <tr> <td valign="top" width="303" align="center"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ih1kgu-_qY4/VLhB2c_hFPI/AAAAAAAAB5Y/HpyngQ3XHvY/s1600-h/Green%2525201%25255B4%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="Green 1" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="Green 1" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-IxaUn0zjaTg/VLhB3FJxeOI/AAAAAAAAB5g/er3FYrCmMOg/Green%2525201_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="297" height="389" /></a></td> <td valign="top" width="303"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-YCDw2EVoliA/VLhB5OseMMI/AAAAAAAAB5o/i3cMLPSCUNo/s1600-h/DSCN0083%25255B4%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="DSCN0083" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSCN0083" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-uJZ0f1SyfHE/VLhB6LZd_FI/AAAAAAAAB5s/_40wJG3ks5w/DSCN0083_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="297" height="389" /></a></td> </tr> </tbody></table> </p> <p>I used a pattern for her pin cushion skirt based on an antique drawing. I streamlined it and, with her permission, I combined it with techniques from Shirley Bligh's pattern. Please <a href="https://drive.google.com/viewerng/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxtYXVyZWVuc2Rvd25sb2Fkc3xneDoyY2Y4ZTZmNzlmNGQ2OTM0" target="_blank">click here for the patterns.</a> I have worked out five sizes and it should be easy for you to enlarge the pieces or make other "in between" sizes if you need them. <br /></p> <p>Following are two more half dolls that I've added to my collection. Many of the dolls have beautiful, and sometimes elaborate, bonnets. The one on the left is an antique.  Her bonnet consists of three colors and she also has a snood.  This totally covers her hair in the back. <br /></p> <p align="center"> <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" width="608" border="0"><tbody> <tr> <td valign="top" width="303"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-IhbOH_S5F7Q/VLhB78zZRyI/AAAAAAAAB54/psAUGuXlAn4/s1600-h/DSCN0089%25255B3%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="DSCN0089" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSCN0089" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-eWDZuutzHMk/VLhB8sBAs1I/AAAAAAAAB58/3aqBLtb6fKI/DSCN0089_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="297" height="389" /></a></td> <td valign="top" width="303"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-6z_r7JU8B4E/VLhB-qbXdUI/AAAAAAAAB6I/HcfLEhzS0h0/s1600-h/DSCN0085%25255B3%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="DSCN0085" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSCN0085" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-FTWK2igDkJg/VLhB_bM2OnI/AAAAAAAAB6M/PPKkgEZJsz4/DSCN0085_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="297" height="389" /></a></td> </tr> </tbody></table> </p> <p> <br />The half doll on the right was made by doll artist Hendrika Smith of Australia and was cast from a mold made from an antique.  The original probably only had a bonnet with feathers but Henny added the roses and gold high lights.  I hate to really call some of these beautiful dolls reproductions as they are more than that. They would be so much easier for the doll artist to do if they were, as the painting on an antique is usually more simple.  As you can see from the photo, the newer ones are more elaborately done with added flowers, decals, real gold, and vibrant paint. These newer dolls also take more firings than the antiques did in order to get the desired finish. I love the antiques for their simplicity and the new ones for their tasteful glitz...does that make sense??  </p> Maureenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07711569333263234504noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9184679877765188702.post-71445211093268824712014-11-24T12:54:00.001-05:002014-11-24T12:57:40.534-05:00Shirley Bligh - A Pattern Shared<p>If you've thought of finishing a pin cushion doll, Shirley Bligh of Australia has generously shared her own design for the pin cushion skirt with all of us.  You can size it down or up depending on what you need for the half doll you're finishing.  It's so nice as the top of the skirt has been designed to better take the bulk away from the tiny waists.  Click on this link(<a href="https://sites.google.com/site/maureensdownloads/" target="_blank">https://sites.google.com/site/maureensdownloads/</a>) to download two pages which give you the pattern and easy instructions.</p> <p>The following photo is Shirley's creation that she made some time ago using her skirt pattern.  This pin cushion doll is one of the prettiest I've seen. Her blog is <a href="http://stitchesandlife.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">http://stitchesandlife.blogspot.com/</a><u><font color="#0066cc"></font></u>. <br /><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-qYWv3zlgx44/VHNwsQy26oI/AAAAAAAAB2o/Xmo-_coc6VM/s1600-h/Capture%25252019%25255B4%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="Capture 19" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="Capture 19" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-2Mg8ch6z-YI/VHNwtZlQAkI/AAAAAAAAB2w/_4L_g4siWxk/Capture%25252019_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="306" height="500" /></a> <br />This photo is of a new half doll that I finished using Shirley's pattern.  This matronly lady was made by the Mundial Company of Belgium.  She is so different I couldn't resist her.  A butterfly is sitting on her arm. <br /><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-QhhUxx6bm-c/VHNwuJ6N-0I/AAAAAAAAB24/Vv3BemSUjDA/s1600-h/DSCN0034%25255B3%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="DSCN0034" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSCN0034" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-RmW4AJ9kgMc/VHNwuwu8P1I/AAAAAAAAB28/j63sM8NjYVs/DSCN0034_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="283" height="500" /></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Iqo3cOs4LT4/VHNwvk6CT4I/AAAAAAAAB3I/FOchnFrA8UM/s1600-h/DSCN0036%25255B3%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="DSCN0036" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSCN0036" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-EmNspDbkFWQ/VHNwwXprsWI/AAAAAAAAB3Q/3kN1f4T5eBc/DSCN0036_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="285" height="500" /></a> <br />In the photos below, I thought I'd show you an antique half doll and a reproduction of the same doll.  Here is the antique that reminded me of the movie "Thoroughly Modern Millie" with her cloche hat.  This one hasn't had her hair bobbed yet!  Flappers and other 1920s gals are pretty common in the half doll realm. <br /><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-SS7aF2YDE6A/VHNwxP0Z9yI/AAAAAAAAB3Y/zn0lYNiXE2Q/s1600-h/DSCN0017%25255B3%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="DSCN0017" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSCN0017" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-RaLeGPOKinI/VHNwx5gEOZI/AAAAAAAAB3g/NQ_OT12XOnQ/DSCN0017_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="500" /></a> <br />So many of the gifted doll artists I've been buying from are in Australia.  I'm starting to think there must be something in the water there!!  This little beauty was made by Carole V. Lyons.  She has reproduced the antique with her own spin with added decals and tiny handmade flowers.   I actually prefer her over the antique because she is so delicate looking.  Tidbit:  Reproductions are about 20% smaller than the antique as the porcelain shrinks during firing.  <br /><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-GSthlOJMKDc/VHNwyg1szxI/AAAAAAAAB3o/PV534rplLkQ/s1600-h/DSCN0016%25255B3%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="DSCN0016" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Half Doll Hanging (sm)" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-jIgNrzTLKe0/VFpuwSiPHFI/AAAAAAAABzg/Ow2cCpDHPSw/Half%252520Doll%252520Hanging%252520%252528sm%252529_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="593" height="788" /></a></p> <p>Starting with this post I will share some photos of half dolls that are in my collection.  Maybe they'll be made whole at a future date, but there's not enough hours to finish them all.  I look for nicely painted faces, reasonable prices, and overall appeal. <br /></p> <p>This first photo is of an antique German half doll.  Arms away are more difficult to make as more molds are required, but this feature makes the half doll more desirable to collectors.  German half dolls are more desirable than those made in Japan.  Quality shows! <br /></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-LQNO3kol3t8/VFpuxEbZpDI/AAAAAAAABzo/6L8-u2epfxQ/s1600-h/Half%252520Doll%2525201%25255B5%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="Half Doll 1" style="border-top: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_0001" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-LKyiqbG9WC4/U0Q8Cl_0A2I/AAAAAAAABtc/sV23XG4Hytg/IMG_0001_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="512" height="389" /></a>  </p> <p>Before beginning, adjust your mind to thinking “cut the bulk!”  The waist on the one I’m going to finish has a diameter of 3/4” which is really tiny.</p> <p>Lots of people who dress these dolls now use fabric glue in places.  Often, glue is the answer.  I try to stitch when I can and I would never put glue directly on the glaze of an antique half doll.  </p> <p>First you want to decide what the final height should be.  I’ve found that measuring the half doll from the top of the head (not including piled on hair, etc.) to the waist (not the bottom of the half doll) is ~1/3 of your final doll with the skirt.  This one is 2 1/4” so her skirt will be in the neighborhood of 4-5” and I will adjust it for the most pleasing proportions at the pin cushion stage.  </p> <p>Before I begin dressing her, I’ve sewn some narrow, doubled over strips of twill tape at the hole areas in the base.  I prefer this to actually sewing the half doll to the pin cushion through the holes as it’s awkward to handle.  I can then spread the twill tape out over the pin cushion and secure it easier and more securely.  You can also run the twill tape through the holes but I like the former technique.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-GiFSf1yLkqY/U0Q8DZaPyAI/AAAAAAAABtk/R1w-w5g4Ryk/s1600-h/IMG_0004%25255B3%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img title="IMG_0004" style="border-left-width: 0px; I also signed up to do the 2013 CQJP. It will help me to stay motivated to keep going. I will probably have to continue with this quilt in order to get it finished. I do have an idea for my next crazy quilt project so I hope with my lack of posting I haven’t lost your interest. Please stay tuned!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-C3wA283-zq0/UKFCUj80MVI/AAAAAAAABhM/ILdL4r3BbK8/s1600-h/CQJP%252520Oct%2525202012%25255B6%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="CQJP Oct 2012" border="0" alt="CQJP Oct 2012" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-rvcWuxxGZZU/UKFCVYoau0I/AAAAAAAABhU/hG28Nr6hZEk/CQJP%252520Oct%2525202012_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="520" height="429" /></a></p> Maureenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07711569333263234504noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9184679877765188702.post-784338887020416332012-09-19T15:54:00.000-04:002012-09-19T15:55:29.566-04:00New 6” Squares<p>Earlier this month I received two gorgeous 6" squares from two talented ladies and I couldn't be more pleased.</p> <p>Carolyn Phillips sent this beautiful Asian inspired square with the focus point being the hand-painted crane in the center. I so wanted to ask her to paint something on my square, as she does such glorious paintings, but I didn't want to influence what she felt like doing. Not only did she send the square, but she also painted these awesome pansies for me to incorporate in another project. Carolyn also included a dragonfly kit which I will add to my 2012 CQJP. I was doing the happy dance when I opened the package.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Kld8HMUrNFk/UFojIX9gFWI/AAAAAAAABgM/FcT65A4T9FU/s1600-h/6in%252520Square%25252011%25255B4%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="6in Square 11" border="0" alt="6in Square 11" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-LFOicHgCzUM/UFojJOAGuQI/AAAAAAAABgU/P60dUB300d0/6in%252520Square%25252011_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="489" height="500" /></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-lYyM5S_Ucd8/UFojJtfjwHI/AAAAAAAABgc/XDSZV4PfVE8/s1600-h/6in%252520Square%25252011%252520%252528flower%252529%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="6in Square 11 (flower)" border="0" alt="6in Square 11 (flower)" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-uJRpsF6x1QY/UFojKcoPxMI/AAAAAAAABgk/Cgs0Jk1eNwc/6in%252520Square%25252011%252520%252528flower%252529_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="498" height="389" /></a></p> <p>Marie Alton, who has been my online friend for years, sent me this intricately embroidered square which has to represent hours of work. Her stitching is so delicate and absolutely precise and I so appreciate her for this work of art. Stunning!!! Never being satisfied, I continued to purchase Susan Clark’s charms at considerable cost. Her charms are still the best on the market as they look like cloisonné so I would never say to do this as their replacement. However, using the newly released Vintaj Patinas, I can easily paint my own charms, have them look wonderful, and have a larger variety to choose from. Here are a few of the charms I’ve painted and a little about the paint. I am now selling the <a href="http://www.maureensvintageacquisitions.com/servlet/the-Vintaj-Patinas-For-Coloring-Charms/Categories" target="_blank">Vintaj Patinas and Glaze</a> but only after I purchased my own and have had such success with them. I thought you might like them too. </p> <p><a href="http://www.maureensvintageacquisitions.com/servlet/the-Vintaj-Patinas-For-Coloring-Charms/Categories" target="_blank"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="Charms" border="0" alt="Charms" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-foyT7IrpNYk/T6qmCxpZevI/AAAAAAAABd0/9EGdDQybJkE/Charms%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="721" height="497" /></a></p> <p>The following are my experiences with the paint, not part of the manufacturers sales pitch:</p> <p>Opaque Vintaj Patinas are permanent on metal and they dry very, very quickly (I’m talking minutes here.) I use only a small dot that I’ve squeezed out on a piece of plastic. Use a brush and dab it on instead of brushing it out for more thorough coverage or apply a 2nd coat. The paints can be mixed to make other colors. Adding a drop of Glaze will extend them. Clean your brush often with water. You can gently sand the paints off in high spots if you want the brass to show through here and there. </p> <p>You are finished after painting or you can antique the piece after it’s dry by mixing 3-4 drops of water with 1 drop of the patina color you want. Paint over the entire piece and immediately wipe off the excess with a paper towel. I love using “onyx” for this step (as seen on the fan, the owl, and the key) but, as in the leaves pictured, I used “moss” as the base and “clay” for antiquing. Neither of the bows were antiqued and both were sanded to show some of the brass. The little filigree is just painted with no other steps taken.</p> <p>Paint over the entire charm if you like with a coat of the Glaze. This also prevents any of the metal you want to have stay it’s true color from changing over time. </p> Maureenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07711569333263234504noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9184679877765188702.post-32491133731832147662012-05-08T14:04:00.001-04:002012-05-08T14:04:20.760-04:00“Acquisitions” from Vintage Textile Show<p>Shirlee and I spent a few hours in Sturbridge MA at the Host Hotel yesterday. The show wasn’t as satisfying as it has been in the past because of the addition of so many costume jewelry booths, but I still had a nice time and came away with some things for my crazy quilts.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-sVpNSuLyE4g/T6lgGXq_BCI/AAAAAAAABdI/ZbWq7L4mbZ0/s1600-h/Show%252520Purchases%25255B14%25255D.jpg" target="_blank"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="Show Purchases" border="0" alt="Show Purchases" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-exCvKIGg8ZQ/T6lgHKOJNRI/AAAAAAAABdQ/viZHIPwSDnE/Show%252520Purchases_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="620" height="346" /></a></p> <p>There is a piece of “motif” lace that I cut apart and am <a href="http://www.maureensvintageacquisitions.com/servlet/the-1499/Vintage-Motif/Detail" target="_blank">selling on my website</a> to share with you.</p> <p><a href="http://www.maureensvintageacquisitions.com/servlet/the-1499/Vintage-Motif/Detail" target="_blank"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="MN-19" border="0" alt="MN-19" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-nptpLUoe840/T6lgH7ln6EI/AAAAAAAABdY/hPF8ybatE5M/MN-19%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="345" height="389" /></a></p> <p>It’s getting hard to find antique laces in quantity but it’s a fun pursuit and gives me an excuse to go antiquing.
